Slow Down Regan!

Ahhhhh! My baby pulled up on her own today from a laying down position to standing. I was really hoping my last one would wait until after her first birthday for these shenanigans. It was so cute because I was working in the kitchen and both boys were right next to her and started yelling.."Mommy, look at Regan..she is standing up all by herself. She pulled up onto the train bin all by herself!" They were so excited. It was like they could not believe their sister was actually in a vertical position b/c she is always in a horizontal one. Regan is 8.5 months. Started army crawling at 7 months. She is our first army crawler and very fast. She loves cords, paper, or anything small that she can put into her mouth. It is comical how long it takes me to complete one task b/c she is on the move. She loves to find Doah's water bowl too. The boys compete (b/c everything is a competition with boys) to see who can get her to laugh the hardest. She will play for a small amount of time in the pack and play as long as she is near her brothers and she has their entertainment. Regan is still such a happy baby who LOVES to smile. One thing that lights my heart is her love for her Daddy. It is amazing. As soon as he walks in the door, she starts swinging her arms, kicking her legs and shaking her head with a huge grin from ear to ear. Then she reaches for him and puts her head on his chest. She does not do that with me. It is like she is telling Logan, "I have missed you so much and love you." She loves to say "Dada and Mama." All our kids said Mama first I think. For about a month, she has been on a 2 nap schedule which is great but confines you to be home most days beside taking River to and from school. She is flexible, enjoys the carseat most days and still has a gummy smile! I think I will be sad when her smile shows teeth! Regan, you bring us so much joy...ALL of us! ox

One day River and his family were outside playing in the leaves. River had a leaf fight with Daddy. Daddy threw the leaves at Mason and Mason said, "I do not like that." Then Daddy threw them at Mommy. Daddy pushed Mommy over in the leaves. Daddy got up and pushed Mason and River in. Then Mason and River pushed Daddy in and Daddy said, "This is the best day ever on the week." Daddy said, "We are going to have the picture lady come." The picture lady took a lot of pictures and fixed too many pictures because the family wanted her too. They all jumped in the leaves and the picture lady took a picture of them. The End

Most days, River and I are alone for about an hour when Mason and Regan are still sleeping. One of River's favorite things to do is to make up a story and tell it to me while I write it down word for word. I love his stories and he is so proud of them. He loves to have Daddy read them when he gets home from work. Here is one from today...

"Christmas Eve Now" by River Welsh

One day River and all of his family were sleeping in bed. Santa Claus came while they were sleeping. Santa Claus and his reindeer came. Santa Claus went down the chimney. He left presents under the tree. Then Santa Claus went up the chimney and the entire family came downstairs and looked under the tree and there was presents. When River was looking under the tree, he saw a bird's nest. They happily opened their presents and got on the couch and watched a Christmas movie. The family went outside and Daddy went to the shed and got the sled. River went down to the house and got Doah to come out in the snow. Daddy put Doah on the sled and they pushed Doah down the hill. Then the family came inside and had some hot chocolate. When the hot chocolate was done, it was night time. River and Mason got to stay up the latest the whole entire night. Then the whole family wend to bed. The end.

Regan had her first food today. Rice cereal. She did really well with the spoon and swallowing but by the 5th bite was making some pretty awful faces. I had some great helpers either taking pictures, wiping her face, or feeding her. Mason and River were so excited to help Regan with eating for the first time! Mason then tried to feed her a pretzel. A bit too early for that though. River is getting really great at taking pictures too. I cannot believe it is already time for me to start making baby food. But for now, we will work on just rice cereal for a few days.

Mason's Cousin Birthday Party

We cannot believe Mason is turning 3 this month. To celebrate, we had a combined pool party at the Wellness Center with Dawson and Ayla. The kids loved swimming in the heated therapy pool. Then we went into a large room to enjoy pizza, opening presents and cake of course. Mason requested a huge cake that looked like a doughnut with sprinkles. It was loads of fun. We also plan to have a small family get together with Mimi and Pop, Aunt Erin, Uncle Todd, Cedar and Eli closer to his real birthday.

I feel like I need to jot down more posts to remember all the "moments" with the kids or at least some of them. Mason is 1 month shy of 3 and still loves to nap for 3 or 3.5 hours a day. Today, he woke up at 3pm. (only after 2 hours) crying very loudly. I think it was a bad dream. I went up there and told him River and Regan were still asleep and that it was still nap time. I had just put R and R down at 230, and I needed some more "Mommy time." He obeyed and I gave him 3 books to look at and turned his light on and told him I would be back to get him when Riv gets up. He was very happy and when I left, I thought to myself, "When did he grow up? I felt like I was talking to River in a way. Too weird." He is turning into such a little boy too fast!

Back to a quiet house...for a few minutes anyway. Yep, Regan just woke..ha!

Took the kids to see all the harrisonburg cousins all day Tuesday. For quiet time, I put River and Marley in a bedroom to play quietly. I opened the door to find River laying down, with his legs spread open and hands behind his head laughing. Marley had a nerf gun out and was loading it above R. "What are you boys doing...?" R says, "We are taking turns shooting eachother's penises."

At 1000am this morning, I had already done 2 crafts with the boys to keep them busy. Then I just went outside to check on them and Mason had peed in a cup outside and River dumped it into the sandbox. Lovely.

This morning, River was singing at the top of his lungs..."Oh no, you never let go of me...through the calm and through the storm..." A beautiful thing for a tired Mommy to hear. Then I hear Mason shouting, "No, stop singing..." There went the moment:)

They keep me on my toes and laughing...love it.

"Blessed are those who mourn..." I have been comforted by this verse as we heard the news this weekend that Belle, Krista's Mom, has pancreatic/liver cancer. She has been having odd, unexplained symptoms for awhile which reached a new level of concern and landed her in the hospital Friday. They found the mass then. She was jaundiced from head to toe and not doing well at all. My heart absolutely breaks for Krista and the entire family. I am so glad Chris and Kevin are so close since Kevin and Dia have gone through this with loosing Dia's Mom recently to cancer. I spent so much of Saturday crying and praying and trying to wrap my head around what was to come. Mason caught me crying Saturday morning, put down his toy and walked over to me. He looked so concerned and asked me, "Mommy, are you sad?" I told him my friend was sick and I needed to pray for her. He climbed up onto my lap and hugged me so hard for the longest time. Then he positioned himself next to me, grabbed my hand to hold and put his head on my shoulders. Like Dia said, "he just paused to be there with you." I was reminded that he is just shy of 3 and already thinking outside of himself. Chris and Krista's faith has been inspiring. They are keeping there eyes on Jesus! They were told most likely her cancer was stage 3/4 due to the mass and her symptoms. With pancreatic cancer, the symptoms usually do not show until the later stages when it is too late for any treatment. It is a cancer that is very aggressive. We all prayed and waited to hear how her surgery/biopsy went today (Monday). My prayer was that there would be a miracle Lord willing and that Belle would have more time with us than the doctors think and they we would be surprised with good news. After phone tags with Chris and Mom today, Mom called to say, her cancer is TREATABLE and that they are going to send her to Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. Her earlier test did not match what they found in surgery today and the cancer had NOT progressed beyond a treatable level. Praise God! This was the great news we all had hoped for. We are also so happy to hear that Belle has Jesus in her heart and that when the time comes for the Lord to take her home, she will be in heaven and Krista will see her again. This was Krista and Chris' prayer going down to WVA for the weekend. I wrote Chris and Krista this past weekend an email. It basically said that I cannot imagine their pain now and no words can help. That life is not fair but that God is good. That we are to trust HIM even when we do not understand why horrific things happen! But how, when the pain is so deep and new??? I turned to the bible and was reminded of some verses for times like these in life....

River just started a story with..."You know Mommy, back in the old times like when you and Daddy were born or when you were kids..." I mean seriously? I had to laugh.

Last night, we loaded the kiddos into the minivan and took them to see Winnie the Pooh. They all loved it! Including Regan:) Hard to believe it was Regan's 2nd movie and she turned 4 months yesterday. Mason ate popcorn for the entire movie and asked for more when it was all gone. That boy can put it down. I even caught him lifting his shirt up and patting his growing popcorn belly. He would dance and laugh in his chair every time music would play during the film and say, "Mommy watch me." River just starred at the movie smiling and in amazement. He even laughed at the jokes and then of course, Mason had to copy him and laugh out loud. We shared the entire theatre with 2 others. So it was nice for the boys to move around a little and for Logan and I to take turns holding Regan. Mason kept asking, "why is it getting dark in here." Logan only had to leave the theatre 2 times for pee pee breaks:) When the movie was over, we let the boys run up and down the isle. L and I were talking about what movies the boys have seen and I wanted to jot them down.

Bumbo Seat, Rolling Over, and Loving Her Bros

I was able to capture Regan rolling over for the first time after church last week. She was 3 1/2 months old and very proud of herself. Momma was too. Regan is teething like a champ and eating very often during the day and night now. Must be a growth spurt along with the teething causing the night waking. She loves her bumbo seat and is learning how to hold objects better. She continues to love her brothers so much. She just lights up when they talk to her and she talks back now along with many smiles.

We celebrated the 4th at Crabijeans this year again. It is hard to believe that it will probably be our last time visiting crabis since it is for sale:( So many great memories. Nothing can compare to the celebrating the fourth of July on the water! Our kids got to stay up 2 nights in a row very late to enjoy fireworks. Saturday night we went to Kinsale to sit on top of the bridge over the water and watch the town's fireworks. The town shuts down the road and bridge for the event. It was Mason's first time seeing fireworks, so it was so amazing to watch his joy and eyes light up saying, " ohhh I like that one and I like that one and..." Regan slept through the whole thing in the stroller. Then on Sunday night we put the kids to bed but soon after we started to hear fireworks across the water. Logan and I ended up getting the boys up b/c the display outside was spectacular. There were like 8 different firework displays and two others, one on each side of crabijeans. We took the boys out onto the dock at 1000pm to watch them and see all the reflections in the water. They were so excited we got them out of bed. They weren't sleeping anyways:) River enjoyed fishing a bunch and caught about 12 fish with Logan. He even had 2 double catches! Needless to say, he was a very happy boy. Regan got to experience Crabijeans for the first time and probably the last. We also enjoyed tying the tube to the dock and floating on it with the kids. River and Mason loved jumping in the water from the dock. Doah had a quick swim too. Logan was our cook on the grill both nights and we enjoyed delicious dinners. Although we did return with a ton of bug bites, we made some nice memories.

Nags Head 2011

This year we all decided to finally rent a house ON the beach. It was the best decision and well worth the money. Although on arrival day, we did hit a bump in the road. Let's just say a rather large bump. The trip down was great and the kids were wonderful. Regan slept the entire way. I would wake her to feed and then we would continue. We stayed with Liz and Hunter and we all had a wonderful time with them. The kids just love their cat and of course, Hunter. Aunt Liz spoiled them with snacks and juice boxes and goodie bags for the trip in the car.

When we arrived at the beach house, we noticed a beautiful home, gorgeous pool and porches and then we walked up the steps over the sand dune and there it was. Huge pipes, heavy loaders, bull dozers, a complete construction site at work with consistent beeping expanding the beach, a 36 million dollar project. We were not informed of this. After all of us returning to the rental agency to return the key and complain, we returned back to the beach house with no other option. They would not give us a new house, a refund, or even an apology. We were told that they sent out an email explaining the beach construction was going to take place. Needless to say, we decided to laugh at the situation b/c we felt we were on a hidden camera show and enjoy our time as best as we could. We were elated to see in the morning that the construction crew had moved down past our home which was a blessing. We thought we would spend the whole week unable to utilize our beach access, etc. So that worked out. Then we woke up the next morning to a fog of smoke outside. The smell was enough to make you cough and quite disgusting. This smell was from the huge brush fires miles away. Thank God, the smoke cleared every morning for us to go to the beach and returned each evening when we were done outside. Oh, forgot to mention that as we unpacked on Saturday, River was looking wasted. Yep, a fever which reached 103 during the middle of the night. He and Mason both got this weird virus, along with others. Thank God it was only a fever on and off for 2 days. Ibuprofen did the trick and no one missed the beach or pool any day. Thank God again!

So with the few bumps, we had a blast as always. Incredible 80-85 degree weather, pool and ocean view from our porches. Unbelieveable. Being right on the beach was not only gorgeous and convenient but it allowed us to really use the beach way more. We would go back for evening walks, pictures, you name it. The pool was a huge hit too each afternoon and evening. Mason took off with swimming with the floaties. No fear ever. The hot tub or "hot pool" as Mason would call it was a favorite as well. Mason and River did great sharing a bed for the first time and Regan slept wonderfully. She made it most mornings until 5/530am. Thank you Lord. I appreciated Chris making coffee early every morning and enjoyed Kevin and Chris' jam sessions. Some awesome praise and worship time with the family. Kevin's voice is really improving. Such talented brothers. Dad and Mom took us out to Miller's on the water for some incredible food one evening. We also ate out at a new place across from our house. Amazing wings, fish tacos, and crab bisque. The other two restaurants we visited were old favorites, Tortugas (gotta have the fish tacos-ordered to enjoy poolside) and The Brewery. Yum. Makes Chick-Fa-Lei seem pretty boring back at home. I snuck away a few times to Tropical Smoothie Cafe and the beloved Outlet Mall. Some other highlights included Ed Bassmaster's Snappin Turtle, the new Pier, Regan sleeping in the tent, go cart riding, 3 family dinners "in", squirt guns, naptime, and I think I have mentioned the ocean view! A huge thank you to Dad and Mom. Logan and I had a very difficult time returning home this year. We treasure that time and only hope and pray for more with the 16 of us all healthy. You really feel spoiled to get just adult time together with your siblings and parents when all the kids go to bed each evening. So so very nice. Glad God gave us yet another year together at the beach!

Mother's Day was very sweet this year b/c it was River's actual birthday and Regan's baby dedication. Mimi, Pop, Poppa, and Gaga all came to church with us. Then Logan and Dad took Mom and I out to brunch to Pine Grove. It was delious as always. Mom and Dad gave Regan a bible, booties, lamb that play Jesus Loves Me and a gorgeous picture frame for her dedication. We came back home to take pictures outside and exchange Mother's Day gifts. It was the perfect day!

River turned 5 May 8th and I realized I never posted. He had a dinosaur theme birthday party...been asking for one for 6 months. We found dino eggs outside, enjoyed the new trampoline, dino cupcakes, an ice cream bar and pizza. Logan and I told him he could invite friends this year but he wanted only his family and cousins. Easy enough! There will be plenty of time for friend parties in the future. The cousins had a blast together and River loved all his presents especially his dino stuff. River requested that we would just say "Happy Birthday River" this year instead of singing. Simple enough. So we did. He is not a fan of everyone starring at him. So, we may have set a new birthday trend in the Welsh household. Although, I do not think that would fly with Mason. He loves the attention. Isn't God so good? This year we went to our church to celebrate Resurrection Day, better known as Easter. It was my first time to dress up Regan in girly clothes. She wore a dress that was Cedar's and I bought her tights after shopping at 4 places to get her the right size and a white bow head band. She looked beautiful. It was so fun to dress her up for church. We attempted to get some family shots after church but you know how that goes with 5 people. One is usually not looking the right direction. Right before Easter Logan and I bought chicks to raise. The boys were thrilled and they are growing so fast. We look forward to getting our very own eggs this fall.

Regan Jeannes is my sister, as Mason would say it. Logan and I do not have the heart to tell River and Mason that her middle name is Jeanne, not Jeans:) Regan is 8 weeks now and I cannot imagine my life without our beautiful daughter. She is a gift from God. She is an answer to prayer. She was born March 24th at 1145 am after my water broke at 3am. She is healthy, a good eater, a good sleeper, and extremely content. The boys are so proud to be her big brothers. They have never shown any signs of jealously, just love towards Regan. They still ask to hold her. When River comes towards Regan, he changes his voice to a soft, higher pitch voice and says "Hi Regan" and rubs her face, while putting his cheek up against her cheek. I swear it is the sweetest thing ever. Regan did her first real smile while Logan was holding her. She heard me talking and she followed my voice by turning her head to me and started grinning from ear to ear while I was talking to her. Logan and I could not believe it. She started talking at 6 weeks and loves to smile at anyone that will talk to her with exaggerated facial expressions. She especially loves watching her brothers. She goes to bed when we do and I usually nurse her between 2 and 3am and then again between 5-7am. She reminds me so much of River's baby pictures. She has red hair like River and his coloring and one dimple on her right cheek. When she smiles and opens her eyes, she looks so much like Mason's baby pictures. It is funny, I never thought River and Mason looked anything alike until I had Regan. She now makes them look alike b/c she has traits from both of them. Anyways, back to the birth story, Mom and Dad witnessed Regan coming into the world and Logan telling me "it is a girl." Mom screamed and so did Dad! Logan was such a proud Daddy holding Regan. You wouldn't have imagined it was our 3rd. I was in shock that we could make a girl:) Sharon and Earl were kind enough to come to our house in the middle of the night and to be there when the boys woke up. Erin and Linda spent the whole day taking care of R and M. Erin was amazing to do this being in her 3 trimester at the time! We were so grateful that they were in great hands! Thanks Aunt Erin! We came home after 24 hours just like when I had Mason, at my request. I'm not a fan of hospitals or staying up all night when you are there. I'll write more as I think of it but want to work on posting some pictures. I'll end with the fact that River tells Regan everyday how much he loves her and and how very happy he is to have her for a sister. Mason tells everyone that meets Regan for the first time..."That is Regan Jeannes. She cries alot." I think this is so funny b/c she rarely ever cries. She is an amazing baby but he knows that babies cry so he feels she should tell everyone that since she is a baby. Ha.

No baby yet. On this gorgeous 75 degree day, I am counting down the days until we meet our newest blessing. I have many many contractions each day but the doc told me that I am not quite ready yet. I believe we are finally "ready"...as "ready" as you can be. This is probably why I feel it is dragging now and taking forever. River and I have been throwing the football today and Mason fell off of his bike and got a goose egg. Tonight while playing with Preston outside, Mason told him, " I got a boo boo today Preston, it is a bunny rabbit egg." I about died laughing. We are still in awe as a family as Logan walks in the door everyday by 445pm. He just completed his first week of work with Jenkins Restoration and we are still so very humbled and thankful for this job. I am so proud of him and all of his hard work for all of us. He will continue to train for the next week. Getting up early is going to be something to get used too but the benefits of being home every afternoon with the family make it all worth it!

I just sat down to read this letter from one of the children we sponsor, Moses. It brought tears to my eyes to sit and think about how sending a small amount of extra money to Moses for Christmas allowed him to buy a pair of pants and cooking supplies for his family. We are a world apart and our children are growing up in America, yet we share the same love for Jesus which unites us. When I received this letter, I could not help but think how funny it is that Moses is "thanking us." No Moses, thank you. I have been blessed by you.

We put our faith in Him and He answered our prayers. God is so good!

On the way home from school today: Conversation between River and Mommy...

R: Mommy, When is Daddy going to be home tonight?
M: Well Riv, not until late. You will already be in bed but he will come in and kiss you goodnight while you are sleeping and tuck you in.
R: Ohhhwww He will not be home for dinner or to play with me? It's not fair.
M: No River, but guess what?
R: What?
M: Daddy got a new job today. He starts in 10 days. He will never have to work late again. He will always be home for dinner. He will always be able to put you to bed and see you every night. What do you think about that?

Snow and Hot Chocolate

One snowy day, River and I went outside to play in the "tree snow cave." The heavy snow weighed the trees down in the back yard to form small caves and tunnels. River was in his glory. So, we are all still alive, just way way busy. I anticipate this blog will be abandoned even more once baby #3 arrives. Yikes, that is less than 8 weeks away! Instead of trying to play catch up with Christmas and Thanksgiving, etc. I will just pick up with where we are now. River continues to tell me how big my belly is getting and how I take up almost all of the chair. Mason loves to pat my belly, lift my shirt and kiss the baby. I wonder what he actually understands. Tonight I told River, "Wow, these steps are getting hard for Mommy. The baby must be getting big." River said, "You should get one of those chair lift things..." I had to laugh b/c it is so true. Simple tasks are getting very difficult such as bending over to pick up something, washing dishes, changing Mason's diaper, helping Mason pee pee on the potty, changing the sheets on the beds, etc. Although everyone, including my doctor, is telling me that I am smaller with this baby, I'm feeling quite large:) We had a 2nd ultrasound a few weeks ago and the baby was in the 7oth percentile for weight, 3lbs. 13oz. We are getting so excited and are enjoying the beautiful 3d pics we received. River is going to be such a great big brother. He cannot wait to help. I bought him a big brother book 5 days ago and I have to read that book to him before nap and bedtime now. He loves it. It will be neat to see him with the baby since he is older now and will understand so much more than when we brought Mason home. Mason will be such a sweet big brother. He will keep us on our toes with being around the little one, potty training, and temper tantrums. I get sad to think that he is getting so big and I am eating up every moment I have with him for extra TLC and cuddle time. He is such a cuddle bug. The last 2 weeks have been very busy for us selling River's bed/bed table on craigslist, painting Mason's new room, picking out new mattresses for both boys, putting together their new twin beds (which will eventually be bunk beds), shopping for new sheets and now looking for bed tables and a dresser for Mason's new room. I have just started to wash baby clothing. A bit behind but hey, it will get done. Eventually we will paint the baby's room once Mason's room is complete and he is officially moved. I'll end right about here...

"River, we have something to tell you..."

Yesterday afternoon, River woke up from his nap so happy. Probably because Daddy was here:) We decided to tell him the news we had been keeping. Logan, grabbed River's hand and while rubbing my belly told River that "Mommy is going to have another baby. You know how you are a big brother to Mason, you get to be a big brother again to either a baby brother or sister." We explained that God has blessed us with another baby that is growing inside of Mommy's belly. River smiled with that huge smile of his and was delighted. He said, "maybe there is 2 or 3 or even 5 in there!" He was so happy and we assured him that there was only one. I was amazed at his response and we were careful about letting him feel special like he now knows the good news and can tell others. We kept it simple and continued our evening normally. But throughout the evening River asked over and over again if he could rub my belly and "touch it" while grinning from ear to ear. He even ran over to Mason with such excitement and said, "Mason...Mommy is going to have a baby and we have to be really careful around her belly." He felt like such a big boy when he called Gaga and Poppa to tell them the news! It was too sweet and something I hope I will never forget. We enjoyed our woodstove fire last night while laying down in front of the fireplace as a family and even with Doah, I would catch River smiling every once in awhile and looking at my growing belly. I was so thankful for this response because I know the highs and lows of change in our lives, especially for River and Mason, that will take place when we transition from a family of 4 to a family of 5.

On the way to school, we always play word games with River. One game is where we describe something with a few clues and the others guess. River's was so cute today. "What lives in the ocean, has a big hole on the top of it, and starts with Hump?" Daddy says.."Ummm a humpback whale?" River is always amazed when we guess it! Too cute. Another one that comes to mind, River said "what has 2 eyes and growls? Daddy guesses "Mommy?" Ha ha ha Honey...as we all laugh and River says, "Daddy, I meant an animal." All of this is going on while Mason is yelling "I spy a giraffe...etc. Gotta love the chatty car rides.

Mason was helping me unload the dishwasher today and fell off the chair and landed on his face on the dishwasher. Ouch. Then tonight, he was running naked (of course) and rammed into some chairs. Crying and limping walks over to me and says, "My boo boo broke open." There was no boo boo just a pink toe but that is how it felt to poor Mason. I'll usually ask what happened even though he is usually right near me and he will tell me "River" while crying, even though River could be upstairs putting his pj's on..keeps us laughing.

River was so excited about school starting that he and Mason had to wear their backpacks the night before over their pj's. He woke up ready to go and see Mrs. Sempeles, Mrs. Griffith, and all his friends. It was still hard to say goodbye to by big boy but much easier than last January when he started. I didn't even cry this year:) Back to WMS we went after a summer at home! He continues to love it as he is one of the "big kids" in the class.

Mason had a regular party at home with Daddy, Mommy, and River and then an extended family birthday party with a tractor theme. I still cannot believe my baby is 2. Mason brings so much laughter to our lives. He is the sweetest boy and has the best laugh. He is still so cuddly and loving. Mason has such a love for his family and all extended family. He is full of personality and quite a talker! Here are a few pictures of the 2 parties. We played hide and seek as a family after he opened his presents with just River, Logan and I. You will see the one picture of River hiding and Mason's eyes closed counting. At the family birthday party, we hid 50 some tractor pictures for all the cousins to find, enjoyed goody bags, pizza, ice cream, popsicles, and a tractor cake. And of course opening presents. River enjoyed the left over icing the night before the party when I finished decorating it!

Blogger has been acting up if I do say so myself. Instead of writing a long description of our 2nd beach trip with Logan's family for the 3rd time, I'll list some highlights. It was another great family/friend vacation with beautiful weather.

- Our boys were obsessed with the big kids, Emy, Charlotte, and cousin Hunter-they all played so well together

- The many huge sand holes, dumptrucks, eating ice cream on the beach

- Eating out and eating in...Logan and I actually had a date at the amazing Torguga's..fish tacos and were able to finish our conversations without kids...did I mention amazing?

- Visiting our great friends Jonathan, Jennifer, Elijah, and Lottie on our day trip to Okracoke-we fell in LOVE with this charming island, amazing character and beautiful scenery, driving on the beach, more eating, and River throwing up his ice cream all over me on the ferry ride back

- Linda and Holmes providing an incredible seafood dinner on the porch of the cottage, we were spoiled

Tonight after reading bible stories to River in bed, I asked him if he wanted to pray for anyone or thank God for anything. He said "yes. my fishing pole, thank you God for keeping it safe tonight and for not letting anyone come in my room and take it. thank you for helping my friends. for seeing Anna tonight at the pool. for keeping me safe and Daddy safe and give Daddy no traffic tonight. that is it. i am done," he said. Love it! I love the innocence of a four year old's prayer. I know it makes Jesus smile. Thank you God for the opportunity to be a Mom to the sweetest four year old. I am blessed!

"have it", "have some", "i do it"

You pretty much talk all day, smile always, laugh easily, and are exploring every square inch of your world. You copy and want to do everything River does from running, climbing, and jumping, to coloring and writing. You also repeat just about anything we say!

When life is good for you or when you get your way, like having a bite of ice cream, you tilt your head to the side and bounce happily up and down as you are eating it in your high chair. It is so funny.

I often find you in the refrigerator, in the snack cabinet, outside riding the gator with River, pestering your brother to get his undivided attention, or dancing to any beat you hear. You truly LOVE to dance and you have incredible rhythm at your young age.

You love to give hugs and kisses and lay your head on my chest and snuggle. I love every second of it! You are so fun at this age and continue to make Daddy and I laugh by what you say and do and River is very entertained by you as well. He says "Mason, you crack me up..." very often.

Just as Jesus came down to our level to "meet" us by sending Jesus to earth to be among us and to die for our sins, we need to come down to our children's level to "meet" them. Get on there level. Play a game with them. Get into their world and do what interests them. Afterall, doesn't God do this with us? Such a great conviction. I'm grateful!

River's Heart

It amazes how sensitive and empathetic River can be. The other day an SPCA commercial came on and the animals looked so sad in their cages. I looked over at River, who was crying. He said, it makes me so sad mommy to see the dogs in the cage..please don't let me see that commercial again. Tonight he walked in on me reading a friend's blog. I was starting to cry reading the post and he saw my tears, immediately tears starting running down his cheeks. I'm sad mommy because you are crying...he said and gave me a huge hug. Ohh River, these are happy tears I explained to him. Gotta love that boy's heart! He has the kindest soul. Thank you Jesus.

We were in the car the other day and the song playing said "you paid the sacrifice." I asked River, what does that mean....he answered right away, "it means Jesus died on the cross for us."

1st Time Camping with Kiddos

So, Logan and I decided last weekend to go camping at the last minute at the mountain property. We borrowed Kevin's tent, picked up some hotdogs and smores ingredients and headed to the property. The boys were in love once we set up the tent by the creek. (no water though). We set up Mason's pack and play and Logan even took 2 mattresses out the the trailer so that we would be "glamping" it up. We decided to stay in the tent to give River the full "camp out" experience, even though the trailer is there as a back up. Good thing. Chris came with the boys and River was so thrilled. Then, Kevin brought the whole family. We cooked hotdogs over the campfire Logan made and then tons of marshmellows. I think Mason ate 3 hotdogs himself. Marley pooped in Chris' hands. (You'll have to ask the whole story sometime) The 3 boys pretty much killed a box turtle. Then the rain came about 830. We all headed to the single wide trailer and all decided to sleep there instead of the tent due to the rain. The kids were in heaven even with the bugs, rain, heat and dirt. They only care about being together. A lesson I hope I never forget. What a great memory. Did I mention 11 people and 3 dogs in a single wide. Logan worked to get Chris a working fan so that Chris could get 3 hours of sleep on the sofa. All the kids slept together, or they started out that way. I woke up in the middle of the night to Chris telling me River was crying for us to get him. So River slept with Logan and I the rest of the night and kicked Logan all night. All in all, I'm proud of the brothers for making it happen last minute. There will be more.

You are four now big boy and I remember bringing you home from the hospital like it was yesterday. Such a great, happy baby. Doah smelled you and licked your head and you two have been the bested friends since. You continue to take naps, started Montessori school in January and have done awesome, did your first lesson today on the "a" box, just learned how to write your name, still full of energy, love to jump on the trampoline and ride the gator, would be naked all the time if you were allowed too, chew juicy fruit gum like it's no body's business, give the biggest hugs and say so many "Daddy, Mommy...." yes, riv, ..."i love you", love books, playing and laughing and running with Mason, playing games such as dominos, matching, i spy, word games in the car, enjoy any candy and ice cream, still call the basement, "dasement", wine or cry when mommy asks you to go to the bathroom, take showers with Daddy and baths with Mason, run or hide from the camera when anyone wants your picture, cry easily, ride your big bike (my motorcycle) on the road, park , and porch, struggle most nights to eat a good dinner unless Mommy and Daddy are helping you, take care of Mason, make your own snack and pour your own drinks, and always light up when I mention any member of your family or extended family. Did I mention, your crack us up. You are funny, oh so lovable, and love living life. Daddy and I are just so glad that God blessed us with you, our River bug, boo, Riv, Buddy!

You wanted a "race car" themed birthday party. We tie dyed t-shirts, beat a race car pinata, had races in the back yard, made homemade strawberry ice cream, had a scavenger hunt, played baseball, opened presents, enjoyed pancakes, bacon, sausage, and fruit (upon your request) and cupcakes. You loved every minute of it and even began to cry when you looked around at all of your family singing "happy birthday to you"..just so full of emotion. I continue to love your heart, River!

I know, I have been such a slacker lately when it comes to updating our family blog. I promise to post some pictures soon of the 2010 blizzards and Easter. The winter was long and hard being stuck indoors and the kids were sick so much. Just about every week, I ended up at the doctor for one of them. Life is apparently much easier with an almost four year old and 19 month old when the weather turns nice. River and Mason are living outside. Playing in the sandbox, collecting sticks, finding worms and bugs seem to keep them busy. It is such a pleasure to actually see them playing together as they get older. River continues to love school and we were/are so blessed for that transition to be so beautiful. He loves playground time and movement days and finding worms on the playground. No surprise there. Riv also enjoys Spanish classes and I already see a huge difference in his fine motor/coloring skills. He continues to be interested in learing new sounds and numbers. We are so blessed for him to have Mrs. Sempeles. His biggest buddies now are Jack and Thor. He wants to do "crafts" all the time and play marbles or other games when Mason is asleep. I eat up the one on one time with River at night before he goes down.

Mason is becoming very independent and a huge follower of whatever River does. I think the second child actually learns more from their older sibling than their parents. He is talking so much this month and repeating words constantly. He loves buckles, putting on his frog boots by himself, playing in the car and truck with the keys, his binki, pops, milk, cuddle time, hugs, and SLEEP. He is such a great sleeper at night and napper. His smile lights up my day with those huge blue eyes and dimples. He is an entertainer as well and goofs off for his brother's laugh. I see so much of uncle Kevin in Mason now personality wise.

The boys got haircuts today and look about 2 years older. River got about 2 inches cut off and all the curls. He looks so mature now and his birthday is just around the corner. I cut River's bangs last week and butchered them. He looked in the mirror and cried. So, Auntie came to the rescue today. Our family is counting down the days to the beach in June...

"Daddy, I want Jesus to come in my heart..."

Last night, Logan was putting River to bed. This was a bittersweet time because he was also saying "goodbye" to River for 7 days. Logan was going to leave for a business trip at 4am and Riv would still be asleep. River taped the 7 day calendar that Logan made for him by his bed. Each day had a picture on it that River wanted to see for that particular day. He says, "You will come home on boat day Daddy" b/c Logan had drawn a boat picture on Sunday, when he returns. After Logan read to him some short versian bible stories, River had on his heart the story of Jesus "Knock Knock Knocking on our Heart." River said, Daddy, I want Jesus to come into my heart." Logan told him that asking Jesus into your heart is something you have to ask Jesus to do when you are ready. River said, "Daddy, you ask him." "Buddy, Daddy asked Jesus into my heart when I was ready and that is something you need to do when you are ready," Logan replied. River said "Okay...Jesus come into my heart." Tears were already rolling down Logan's cheeks as he was having to say goodbye for the week and knew this would be the last time putting Riv to bed for awhile. The tears rolled even more after this. Yes, he is three. Yes, he is innocent. But, I wonder what his little mind was thinking. It really is so very simple to ask Jesus into your heart and believe in him. We cried. It was just cool! Of course we look forward to the day where both our sons accept Jesus as their personal Lord and Savior and believe in him when they are old enough to grasp that concept. But how cool for River to begin to desire that at age three.

Great Country Farms was so fun for the kids. We met Mimi, Pop, Aunt Erin, Uncle Todd, and cousin Cedar there. River loved the giant balloon bounce to jump on and especially the hay wagon ride to the pumpkin patch. It was great for him to actually see that pumpkins do grow in pumpkin patches, come from the ground and not the grocery store. It was really cold that day but the weather made it feel that much more like Fall time! It was a great family memory. We carved one pumpkin and drilled holes in another. River names the pumpkins "Jake" and "Mimi."

For Halloween, we went to the church that my brothers attend with their families for a fun party designed especially for kids. They had so much to do and River could not wait to spend time with his beloved cousins! He must have asked me about the party 50+ times. So, he was more than thrilled when he finally got to dress up at Auntie and Uncle Chris' house with his cousins and then hit up the party. River was a green dragon that he picked out at "Old Navy" after trying on 3 costumes and looking at himself in the mirror. I could not believe he was just 3 acting much older. My Mom bought Mason's costume at a thrift store. The BEST $2.00 spent. I still laugh just when I think about him in this costume. I spent the whole night chasing Mason around and getting him off of the top of tables that he climbed on over and over again. As fun as this stage is, I had forgotten about how demanding and tiring it can be on MOMMY! We also enjoyed another hay wagon tractor ride at the party, this time in full costume. A Hike to Bear's Den, Playdoh, and Cookies...

I just wanted to include some pictures from Sept. and early Oct. before I post Halloween pics. We enjoyed another hike to Bear's Den. River always loves to climb around on the rocks and find awesome sticks and small rocks on the way up and back down to the car. I still find the view so beautiful and breath-taking no matter how many times I have been there. Reaching the top seems like such an accomplishment with two kids and it is nice to sit, enjoy the view, drink some water, and have a snack. So, that is what we did.

I also have been staying busy doing various arts and crafts projects and different activities with River. He keeps me on my toes and we try to have that special time together during Mason's morning nap. Some pictures below include making some homemade playdoh and Halloween cookies. River would say he liked icing the cookies the best. He piled the icing on top. I mean piled it on and was so proud of his creations. Enjoy...

Mason Turns One

Mason turned one on Aug. 30th, 2009. We just had his "Doggy" birthday party on Sunday, Sept. 6th. I made a "dog bone" cake and puppy cupcakes for the kids. All the cousins were there and the kids enjoyed the backyard baby pool and sprinkler. Mason loved playing in the pool and carefully exploring his birthday cake with each finger. He was so gentle. It was funny to watch. He had such a surprised look on his face when the candle was lit. Mason opened some awesome presents including some toys, a puzzle and book, and clothing. There was a doggy bone hunt down in the basement for all the children. (Just like an Easter egg hunt except with dog bones.) The kids were so excited as if they were finding candy instead of dog bones. We had a taco bar with chicken, beef, beans, and all the works. It was delicious. And Mason, you enjoyed every minute of it. I cannot believe you are one, my sweet "Macy boy." You are such a joy and I just love the way you are always hugging me and laying your head on my chest. I was very happy to go to Oklahoma for my Uncle Gary's funeral. I wanted to be there. I wanted to be with my Dad. It was a bittersweet trip. So many emotions. It was wonderful to see all my cousins and Aunt Susie. It had been about 12 years since I last saw them. Every interaction was filled with hugs and tears and "I love you's" ...pretty amazing considering that last time we all hung out together was so long ago. I was so proud of my dad and his words during the eulogy. I knew he was an awesome public speaker and his words were so moving. Here are a few pictures of my extended family and I.

Back from Nags Head

We are on our way home from Nags Head tonight. After a great week, I am looking forward to being back at home and of course, our bed! Another relaxing beach trip only this time with Logan's family and some friends. We shared a house with Todd, Erin and Cedar and Holmes and Linda stayed with Clare and the girls. We had wonderful weather and always a breeze even on the hottest days. River loved having Emy and Charlotte to play with at the beach. I really think that kid could play for 10 hours at the beach and never get tired of it. Although it was hard for him each day to leave around 1:30 for a shower and nap, his body needed the rest after all the sun and running around in the sand. Riv did lots of bike riding and walks with Logan and I. After leaving tonight he cried for awhile saying, " I really miss the beach cottage and really want to go back." It was sweet. There were a few things River said this week that were just so precious that I wanted to jot them down before I forgot. One night I went in to check on him after putting him to bed and he said, "mommy, I just cannot sleep. I want God to come here." Today, he heard me tell Logan that my lower back was really hurting me and he said, " mommy, just ask God to help you." I guess we are doing something right as parents b/c River knows when someone is hurting or in pain, we ask God to heal them. It is just amazing how a 3 year old has to remind us to do so sometimes. So, I asked God to "help my back."

After dinner tonight, I looked across the table at Linda (Logan's mom) and said, "Linda, you know we are leaving from here to go home..." Her eyes swelled up with tears and said, "No." I didn't think she had remembered so I offered for her to take Mason for a short walk. She was so appreciative and took him saying, "It has just been so wonderful having everyone together." She was crying and grabbed my hand and whispered " I love you." It was a sweet moment. A bittersweet moment. One that made me smile. I do not know what is going on in her head at times with Alzheimers but I thank God for how much she cares about family and how much she loves her family.

I lost my Uncle Gary yesterday. My dad's brother. Mom called me at the beach to tell me. He fought cancer I know for atleast 4 years. My dad brought him to Harrisonburg a few years ago when I was pregnant with River. A very dear man. Sweet man. Little man. He has had a tough life. Was in the army. Such a hard worker his whole life. Just a sweetheart. I will never forget his smile or laugh. He never had much money at all and when he left to head back home from his visit with us, he bought me a dozen roses. I was so appreciative b/c this is someone that did not have the money but had the huge heart! It was a weird goodbye for me b/c it was like I knew that would be the last time I would see him until heaven. With all of this going on now, I just hope and pray that I will always be close to my family because life is short on earth. I thank God that we are close and love one another. That is what matters.

July 4th at Crabijeans

We met Mom and Dad and Chris' family at Crabijeans for 4th of July. We had such a beautiful weekend and the water was very nice. I took turns pulling Logan and Chris on the tube on the back of the seadoo. It was always fun to look behind and see that they were no longer on the tube, just dumped in the water! Fireworks at the water are always so amazing b/c we sit outside and have atleast 8 different shows to watch across the water, and of course, our neighbor next door does a display. The only downfall was getting eaten alive by the bugs. Dawson, Marley, and River loved to fish and all caught fish. It was a huge deal baiting the rods and casting that weekend. I got some amazing pictures of that on my mom's camera only. (unfortunately). But, here are a few from that weekend anyway.

Colorado Trip

We had the opportunity to go with Logan on a business trip to Colorado. I never get tired of looking at those gorgeous mountains. God is awesome! Overall, the boys did great sleeping in hotel rooms. Mason was usually found in the

bathroom (half in the tub) in his pack-and-play. It made for interesting night visits to the bathroom. HaHa. I planned something fun for the boys each day. A few of our highlights were visiting "Garden of the Gods" and the Zoo. Of course, we enjoyed the hotel pool. River was always in his life jacket and Mason in his floatie. It was nice to get away and spend time with Logan while he worked! Very fortunate that we could go!

June Beach Trip

We went to the beach in June this year with GaGa and Poppa and all the family to Corolla. We stayed at a 3 story house with a pool. Our first year for a pool with all the kids and it was a huge hit. We spent most mornings taking turns either staying at home for the babies (Chloe and Mason's) am nap or taking the older ones to the beach. Then back to the house for pool time before naps. We loved laying by the pool during naps..gotta love those monitors! Enjoyed walks, bike rides, and just great quality hangout time with the family! We continued to have each couple cook one night for all 15 of us this year and went out the other nights. Pizza in one night. The kids dug up sand crabs everyday at the beach and Marley and River were constantly pushing their huge matching dumptrucks full of sand everywhere. Abby and D loved to ride the boogie boards close to the shore. We also took the kids to a nearby lighthouse and climbed all 15 stories. River did so with no problem. No surprise there. It was hard to come back...but then again, it always is! Another wonderful trip with the family.

No more croup please...

The boys are both getting over croup. Nasty, barking seal cough and fevers off and on. Thank God! Mason was put on his first medicine. A steroid very common in treating croup. He hates it and spits half of it out while choking on the other half. I took the boys to the doctor last Monday and as usual River's anxiety increased as the day went on. He is afraid of doctors. Sounds like his mommy, right? Anyways, he did so awesome for the first time b/c we saw the nurse practictioner and she really took her time with River. She had him use the "flash light" to look in his ears, etc. She made it so much fun. He ended up laughing and loving the doctor's office for the first time ever. This is the same kid that at his 3 month check up screamed and threw a fit to get weighed. They had to weigh me first and then I held River kicking and screaming just to get his weight. Fun times.

Here is an update on what the boys favorite things are now in there life and what they are doing: I need to do this more!

Mason is almost 11 months. Takes 2 long naps during the day and about 11/12 hours at night. Loves his bed. He is standing by himself now, loves to be in any water (pool, kid pool in our backyard, and bath tub). He feeds Doah from the highchair now and eats anything he shouldn't. He knocks over the dog's water bowl atleast one time a day. He responds to "patty-cake", "dance" and "no". (ie, claps repeatedly, bounces up and down, and shakes his head back and forth when you say no) He also has figured out how to turn on and off the kitchen light by flipping the switch in his highchair. He thinks he is so funny. And he is. He laughs and laughs at River all the time. He loves to drive River's big car and have Riv push him around.

River is 3.2 years and entertains Mason constantly. They kind of already wrestle on the floor. River wants to be naked with the water hose outside and well, naked inside too all the time. It is a daily request to have a popsicle and gum now. He still loves playdoh and painting and now enjoys loading his wagon outside with sticks and weeds. Everything is "my" instead of "I." He is trying to ride his bike more and more, getting started is still complicated with turning the pedals. Loves baking with mommy and licking the bowl. Has to help with the laundry and insists on sitting on top of the washing machine while it is filling up to watch the spinner start. Still taking naps! Always please Riv!

They are fun and keep me on my toes.

Goodbye Binki

So, I know to many people, giving up your binki at age 3 is ridiculous. Well, we finally encouraged River and put our foot down once all of our traveling was done in June. I always want to remember it and someday I want River to read about this milestone in his young life. We were so very proud of him that he decided to do it last Wednesday. First we cut the tip off of his binki, tied it to a string and hung it on a tree. Logan, River and I went outside before bed and I will never forget the feeling I felt. River excitedly ran over to the tree and it was like a part of me was hung on the tree too. The part that says, you are not a baby anymore. You are my big boy and all the times flashed of River as a baby up until now of that binki in his mouth before bedtime or on the couch to watch a movie. The comfort was gone. As tears rolled down my face, I uttered the words..."I am so proud of you River. You are such a big boy!" I could not help but notice tears in Logan's eyes too. We just smiled. The "binki ferry" came that night...after he was asleep and took the binki. She put a wrapped present under the tree. River was very excited to go to bed so that he could wake up and get the present under the tree outside. Little did he understand that his "3 year comforter" would never return. I knew it. I assumed that the next day would be awful at nap time and it was. Imagine taking your favorite thing away from you, cold turkey, forever. Just awful. He was so excited in the morning to run outside and open up his horse trailer he had asked for. Yes, I called the binki ferry and had a long conversation with her about River getting big now and how he needs to give up his binki to babies..etc. and that he was ready for a horse trailer. The next 3 days at nap time in particular were so horrible. He begged me to tell the binki ferry that he was not done and he wanted his binki back. He would cry, not just any cry, but close to vomitting for 1 hour until he would give up and fall asleep in my arms. River never knew that tears flowed down my face silently for his pain. As gushy, over sentimental, and/or dramatic as this all sounds, it is how I felt. How River felt. And now, 1 week later, he has adjusted and is just fine. Just like they all are eventually. Once again, even with the little stuff in life like giving up your binki, time heals! River, mommy and daddy love you and are proud of you. We did not have our camera to take a picture of your binki hanging on that tree but daddy and I will always have that picture within us.

We left our camera at "Crabijeans". As soon as I get it back, I will post some pictures from our family beach vacation, our time in Colorado and fishing at Crabijeans with family for the fourth.

River's 3rd Birthday

For River's 3rd birthday, he wanted a "Mater" cake from the movie "Cars". Mater is the towtruck. So I made a crumble rumble mater cake. We also borrowed a moonbounce and enjoyed fun times with cousins Dawson, Marley, Chloe, Abby, Ayla and Cedar. We had been singing "Happy Birthday" to River for a month, so he was thrilled when it was finally time for everyone to sing to him at his party and blow out those 3 candles. I cannot believe you are 3 now buddy! Our little riverboo!! You are too fun.
